Alcan Road Trip Day 4 - Watson Lake to Fort Nelson

 

Day 4 - Watson Lake to Fort Nelson, with a stop at Liard Hot Springs. 321.4 mi.

It would be difficult to label any one part of the Alcan as 'the most scenic,' but if I had to, it would probably be this leg of my trip.  Buffalo right next to the road, picturesque mountain lakes, and twisty mountain roads culminating in a mountain pass descending into the flats.

Liard Hot Springs.  I wanted to take more pictures, but also didn't want to photograph people as they were swimming in the springs.

Mountains just outside of Muncho Lake

Another campground along the Liard River.  The amount of scour from flooding is unreal, and I'm not sure the camera did a good job of capturing it.  I assume it is the result of a glacially dammed outburst.

Stopped for some construction by Muncho Lake.  Perfect opportunity for a picture.

Out of the mountain twisties headed towards Fort Nelson.  Some more buffalo decide to wander out into the road in front of me.

Alcan Road Trip Day 1 - Girdwood to Tok

Day 1.  15 Sept 26.  Girdwood to Tok via Glennallen.  358.8 miles

APRS track for day 1.  My subpar radio installation and its effect on my APRS coverage will be a continual theme throughout this trip.

The Matanuska River valley.  It was clearly moose hunting season.

HAARP.  Would like to make it to an open house one of these days.

 

New Years' Day aurora

Weather has been weird this winter, with precious few clear nights for stargazing. We got a decent one a week ago though, right as a big solar storm ripped through. I took these shots from my bedroom window.  You can see my weather station and one of the HF antennas in the foreground.

Gull Rock Trail

Hiked about halfway down Gull Rock Trail in Hope today. Reminded me just how out of shape I am, but it was worth it. Hard to take a bad picture on this trail.
